On this day in 1945 the SS Egbolen, laden with a vital cargo of War materiel from Wm.Youngers Brewery, struck a mine and sunk. Throughout the war beer was considered an essential element in maintaining the morale of troops. Beer from some breweries was actually packaged in camouflaged (Olive Drab) cans such as this example by Schaefer Beer (see below).
