On November 29th in 1650, Cornelius Van Tienhoven, Secretary to the Director General of New Amsterdam, declared that innkeepers should have nothing to complain about the beer tax since they passed the entire amount on to customers. It seems consumers have been taking it on the chin ever since. 15 November On this day in 1980, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company of Chico, California brewed its first batch of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Many consider it the prototypical American Pale. An off-shot of the traditional English Style, Sierra Nevada used American hops which yielded a distinct citric-like flavor profile. CORRECTION ISSUED

In the previous “This Day In Beer History” a correction is needed when it advises the reader to buy a beer for their favorite Marine. Unfortunately Auto-correct changed them to him and I did not catch this error until much later. On November 10, 1775, in Philadelphia’s Tun Tavern, Beer witnessed the formation of the United States Marine Corps. Since then this day has been celebrated as the Marine Corps Birthday.
