This Day in Beer History

On March 28, 1836, Frederick Pabst was born. During his original career as a Great Lakes steamboat skipper he met and subsequently married Maria Best. His new bride was the daughter of Phillip Best, a famous brewer in Milwaukee. A year later Phillip convinced his new son-in-law to join the brewery. Later, after assuming leadership of the brewery, Frederick changed its name to “Pabst”. Make your own beer history on June 6, 2020 when Sandy Downs hosts the Beer Fest. VIRTUAL BEER

The NABA Beers of the World brings you this virtual beer. Ommegang Abbey Ale, Cooperstown, NY USA – Crafted in the image of Belgian Dubbel, the reddish brown hues are almost Mahogany-like. Sitting atop this ale is a long-lasting, creamy-white head which elegantly laces down the glass. Flavor is Belgian-like with deep malty sweetness, hard candy, caramel\toffee, honey and a light, spicy character that suggests citrus, clove, and vanilla. It has medium body and carbonation, finishing sweet and nearly sticky. Idaho Falls Beer Fest June 6, 2020 Tickets on sale

Beer History

On this day in 1906 Pabst Brewing opened a new beer hall on 125th street in New York City. It was one of several attempts Pabst made to crack into the NYC market already crowded by local beer from Ruppert, Schaefer, Rhinegold, Ehret, Ballantine, Trommers and others. The new beer hall was a major commitment, the largest of its kind, it could sit 1,400 at a time.  Make your own Beer History on June 6, 2020 at the Beer Fest in Idaho Falls. ROMANIA

Ursus Black, Ursus Breweries, Cluj Napoca, Romania – Ursus, or Bear, thus it’s named after a Black Bear. Dark, nearly opaque; topped with a creamy colored head. Aroma is of dark bread, dark malts, and dark sugars. It’s sweet; a dark almost burnt character underneath an intense sweetness punctuated by a bit of licorice. Mouthfeel is similar to a Schwartz beer and it seems light compared to the intense sweetness. Bitterness makes an appearance in the finish. ©   BEER FEST 2020 in Idaho Falls – June 6th Tickets on sale

BrewDog in the News Again

Scottish- based BrewDog continues to make Beer-news. This past week BrewDog expressed interest in possibly buying an existing West-coast brewery to develop into a Brew-hotel “The Doghouse”much like it operates in Columbus, Ohio. This was fresh on the heels of a BrewDog offering for its fans to trade-in used BrewDog beer cans in exchange for a share of the company (three weeks ago) and the opening of its Pittsburgh ‘Outpost’ Brewpub (3 days ago).  What’s next? Who knows, but it’s bound to be entertaining. Mountain Brewers Beer Fest, Idaho Falls.
