Anheuser-Busch – has announced the release of Budweiser Nitro Gold Lager. The company describes it as a fuller mouthfeel, taste and appearance version of Budweiser with an ABV (Alcohol by Volume) of 5%. The new can contains no ‘widget’ to release the nitrogen. Ursus Black, Ursus Breweries, Cluj Napoca, Romania – Ursus, or Bear, thus it’s named after a Black Bear. Dark, nearly opaque; topped with a creamy colored head. Aroma is of dark bread, dark malts, and dark sugars. It’s sweet; a dark almost burnt character underneath an intense sweetness punctuated by a bit of licorice. Scottish- based BrewDog continues to make Beer-news. This past week BrewDog expressed interest in possibly buying an existing West-coast brewery to develop into a Brew-hotel “The Doghouse”much like it operates in Columbus, Ohio. This was fresh on the heels of a BrewDog offering for its fans to trade-in used BrewDog beer cans in exchange for a share of the company (three weeks ago) and the opening of its Pittsburgh ‘Outpost’ Brewpub (3 days ago). Birrra Moretti La Rossa, Birra Moretti, Italy – A glass presents an attractive, bright red\amber beer with a lasting cream-tan head. Aroma is soft with equal amounts of dark bread, highlighted by dark fruits including prunes, raisins and a bit of molasses. Regardless of all that, the body is lighter than anticipated. With this beer emphasis is placed squarely on the malt and alcohol, hops are subtle and restrained. On this day in 1873,Joe Johnson of Lockport, New York was celebrating his good fortune. His friend and brewery owner John Gibson agreed to Johnson fulfilling a dream by spending a night in the brewery. It was a ill-conceived celebration; his body was found, head hanging down into a wooden, open-tank of beer. Super Bock, UNICER União Cervejeira S.A., Portugal is the country’s best selling beer. Classifying its style can be difficult; marketed as a bock, it leans toward the American Pilsner style, bordering on malt liquor, yet retains some of the boozy traits of bock. As such, Super Bock pours light gold colored with a nose of low straw and some very faint floral scent. Milwaukee- based Sprecher Brewing, founded in 1985 has been sold to a Milwaukee based investment group. No details were release on financial terms for the brewery which sold 9,000 barrels in its last reporting year; at it’s peak Sprecher sold 25,000 barrels. In other news, Carol Stoudt of the Adamstown, PA ‘Stoudts’ Brewing has announced her retirement and closing of the brewery at the end of this winter after more than 33 years in operation. On this date in 1935 Krueger Brewing Company, in cooperation with American Can Company, released canned beer for the first time. Richmond Virginia was the test market for this new product. At that time it required a can opener (church key) a concept so new the beer came with instructions on how to open it. Ringnes Bryggeri, Oslo – is Norway’s largest selling beer. It offers a deep straw color with hints of orange hue. A white head of moderate height may produce a bit of lacing along the walls of the glass. Aroma is of sweet malt with only a hint of hops. Flavor is of a slight bitterness as normal in the pilsner style and includes a bit of graininess within the malt.
